Abstract:
»Celia Daileader then discusses two poetic versions of the rape of Lucrece. The first is the famous poem by Shakespeare, which Daileader argues is not only bad politics but also bad poetry. More interesting is the retelling by Thomas Middleton, The Ghost of Lucrece, where Lucrece summons her rapist to follow her to hell, demonstrating Lucrece’s power. By, in essence, resurrecting Lucrece, Middleton allows for both her rape and her redemption.«
